March 31, 2018

Very recently, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, founder of the worldwide association of Kadampa Buddhist centers to which we belong, sent a request to our current Resident Teacher, Gen Kelsang Dorje. He asked Gen Dorje to become the Resident Teacher at Kadampa Meditation Center Indianapolis beginning April 16.

On the same day, Gen Kelsang Zamling will become the new Resident Teacher for Kadampa Meditation Center Chicago. Gen Zamling is currently the Resident Teacher at KMC Indianapolis. (Please scroll down to read more about him.)

This is an exciting development for both Chicago and Indianapolis, and a cause for rejoicing. As a center, we are dedicated to helping everyone throughout Chicago-land develop inner peace. And we can be confident that in requesting this change, Geshe-la has that very same wish in mind.

Gen Dorje has constantly shown what it means to follow Geshe-la’s example of flourishing Dharma within our own hearts and in the hearts of others – for the sole purpose of bringing greater peace and happiness to this world. Our incoming Resident Teacher, also following Geshe-la’s example, will no doubt continue to provide an inspiring example for us all. His outer features will be different, but the Dharma at his heart will be the same. We look forward to giving him a warm welcome.

Gen Dorje will continue to teach all of his usual classes through April 15.

Please join us for a party to send off Gen Dorje. We will all have the chance to wish him well at his new post in Indianapolis, and to share our appreciation for his tireless efforts on behalf of our center.

Gen Kelsang Dorje has been the Resident Teacher for Kadampa Mediation Center Chicago since 2010, and a student of Geshe Kelsang Gyatso for over 17 years. Gen Dorje is admired for his warmth and humor in making Buddha's teachings relevant to the modern world. He is an inspiring example of how to integrate Buddha's teachings into a joyful life. During his time at KMC Chicago, the center has expanded from its main location in Oak Park to include a second dedicated space in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago and thriving branch classes in South Bend, Indiana. We are grateful for his tremendous efforts to benefit our center and the people of Chicago-land.

Gen Kelsang Zamling is a modern Buddhist monk and most recently has been the Principal Teacher of Kadampa Meditation Center Indianapolis. He has been a student of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso for many years, and has taught in the United States and in the UK. Gen Zamling completed an intensive 6 month Special Teacher Training Program with our General Spiritual Director, Gen-la Kelsang Dekyong, to further his qualifications as a teacher. He is well-loved by his students, and sets an immaculate example of someone who has taken Buddha's teachings to heart. Gen Zamling is known for his practical approach, warmth, and clarity. We feel very fortunate to welcome his as our new Resident Teacher at KMC Chicago!
