The Power of Spiritual Community

Today, many more people identify themselves as spiritual than profess affiliation with a

particular spiritual tradition. The implication would seem to be that for a good portion of

Americans, being part of a community of like-minded practitioners does not seem all that

valuable to their spiritual life. Thus, it is reasonable to ask, What are the benefits of spiritual

community?

Buddha taught that the spiritual community, or sangha, is vital to sincere practitioners.

Our sangha friends inspire us with their example; they help us clarify confusion and refine our

understanding; they support us when we struggle; and they offer us the joy of companionship. Moreover, there is a spiritual power that both benefits the individual and accrues to the larger community when people come together for a common spiritual purpose.

One of the most uplifting things to do in our tradition is to attend a festival, especially an

international festival. Being among thousands of practitioners gathered from all over the world is an experience like no other. It offers a little taste of what the world might be like if everyone believed in the project of creating a peaceful world. Whether we like it or not, we are part of the collective experience of sentient beings. We are all in this together, we need one another, and just as we are sustained by community, we are its lifeblood.

We invite you to hang out after a class or retreat for a tea and a chat. It's a great way to get to know our teachers,

as well as other folks who are interested in making positive change in their lives. Look forward to seeing you soon.
